Scientists working on Dawn spacecraft

Dawn Spacecraft in Cleanroom at
Orbital Sciences

Technicians complete the interior assembly of the spacecraft before installing the panels. The exposed segment in front of the man on the left holds some of the valves and other components for the xenon gas used by Dawn's ion propulsion system. The stalks at the upper corners of the spacecraft hold Sun sensors, used to help orient the craft in an emergency. Near the base of each of the two Sun sensors on the left are the star trackers, the principal means the spacecraft uses to find its orientation in space. Protective covers obscure the apertures of these star trackers in this picture. + Learn More
